I am also seeking the history of Wells Place, dates of any demolition/alterations and why did many streets in have the names changed or slightly altered. John Nicholls, Vicar of St GilesI'm looking for information on the pioneer charity worker and vicar of St Giles' in Camberwell in the 60's, John Nicholls. I work for St Giles Trust - a charity that had its origins in the crypt of the church and that was historically a daycentre for homeless people. Recently a local firm of solicitors returned a minute book of a bunch called the 'Camberwell Samaritans' who, in 1962, set themselves the task of assisting the poor, sick, mad and drunk of Camberwell. Rev. John Nicholls was the founder and director of this group; a man with a plan. I want to know more about him but so far the trail is cold.... I am interested who he was, where he came from and what became of him after he left Camberwell... in any leads really but I would be particularly interested in correspondance with anyone who knew him. Many thanks! Mail-me Post reply -->London Camberwell Alex 5 Mar ^ Camberwell John NichollsJohn Nicholls became Rector of St Mary's Chiddingfold Surrey in 1983 (this was a Crown appointment). I can't remember where he came from but he was at The Tower of London for a while, I think after Camberwell. He lived there with Dorothy and his faithful dog until his retirement in December 1985. Unfortunately in the January of 1986, he became suddenly ill and died in Guildford Hospital. He is buried in Truro. There wasn't a spare seat or a dry eye at his memorial service in Chiddingfold. They had bought and just moved to a retirement flat in nearby Haslemere where Dorothy and dog continued to live for a number of years. Dorothy then moved back to Nottingham where she came from and where they met. He was a wonderful man. He married us in '84 and our eldest son was the penultimate to be baptised by him in December '85. Post reply -->London Camberwell Annika 2 Jun ^ CamberwellGot dates slightly wrong about John Nicholls. He went to Chiddingfold in 1974, from the Tower of London. We moved there 1983 and although I don't remember timings exactly, he knocked on the door fairly early on and invited himself and dog in for a get-to-know-you chat. Post reply -->London Camberwell Pete Shields 29 Jun ^ Camberwell Caldecott SchoolHello Pete, My name is Elizabeth. I was a pupil at Caldecott School from 1957 until 1962. So you were leaving as I started. I've been trying to find information myself, and contacted the Minute Library Archives. They have a few records but not many. Tel:- 0207 926 6076 There were no school reports or photo's, but you may find something useful. Caldecott no longer stands. I live in Cornwall so don't know when it was demolished, but I believe the area was taken over by Kings College Hospital. I also contacted the Metropolitan Archives and they were unable to help. Will try the National Archives and let you know if they have any records. Kind regards, Elizabeth Post reply -->London Camberwell Elizabeth Kirk 13 Nov Camberwell Carpenter/Joiner neededHello, I need a carpenter or joiner to fix some windows/floorboards and maybe fit some shelves and a kitchen.
